Cape Town, home to South Africa’s seat of parliament, is characterised by both a rich urban and natural history. Surrounded by the impressive Table Mountain reserve, the ‘Mother City’ boasts one of the highest levels of biodiversity of any equivalent area in the world.
Established as a way station for European ships traveling to the Dutch East Indies in the 17th century, South Africa’s oldest city lays claim to some of the countries most iconic historical landmarks.
Each featured building, in this artwork, includes the date it was completed and the architect who designed it. Prominent features range from the striking Zeitz MOCCAA, designed by Thomas Heatherwick, completed in 2017 to the now Bo-Kaap museum originally built in 1768.
